De-Engineering 03.1

AI creates the PLC program from the technology description.

PLC control software is created automatically from the technology description of the equipment. AI assembles code to the IEC 61131-3 standard (Structured Text), e.g. for CoDeSys, from verified solution libraries. The engineer checks and approves the code, then it goes into the PLC.

What you get

A result, not a list of features.

01

Days instead of weeks

The program for an air-handling unit comes from the description, not from scratch. The engineer reads and approves, not writes.

02

Fewer commissioning errors

Points, tags and sequences come from the same description as the drawings and BMS. Nothing is retyped by hand.

03

The same standard in every project

Solution libraries and program blocks are verified and repeatable. Know-how stays in the company.

What AI creates

What exactly it does.

  • Technology description of the equipment (TDS) from the register or from the documents: equipment, sensors, actuators, control requirements.
  • IEC 61131-3 Structured Text code from standardised program blocks, ready for TwinCAT 3, CODESYS, Merbon IDE and other environments (table below).
  • Control functions, control loops (PID), fault states, frost protection, start-up and shutdown sequences.
  • Points for the supervisory system with the same signal tags as in FluxPlan and TechSchema.
  • Deterministic functions from approved libraries. AI assembles, the engineer approves, every version is logged.
  • After a design change the code is regenerated and the difference is visible before deployment.
Where you can use the code directly

Standard Structured Text that you load into common PLCs for building services.

AI generates code in Structured Text according to IEC 61131-3. Where the ST implementation is complete, you open the program in the platform's development environment and load it into the PLC without rewriting. Systems built on graphical blocks (FBD, Sedona, proprietary macros) need a translator into their blocks. Overview by country:

Solution for Sauter, Siemens and other systems without ST

ST logic runs alongside; the BMS reads it via BACnet.

Where the BMS controller does not support IEC 61131-3 ST (Sauter, Siemens Desigo, Trend, SpaceLogic, Distech, Carel), the generated code is not deployed into it but into an ST controller next to it. The BMS communicates with it via standard BACnet.

  1. ST code runs in a cyclic deterministic taskon a CODESYS or TwinCAT runtime, e.g. WAGO PFC, Beckhoff CX or DEOS.
  2. Control variables are mapped to native BACnet objectssetpoints, operating states, alarms and faults as Analog Value (AV), Binary Value (BV) and Multi-State Value (MSV), directly in the ST environment.
  3. The BMS controller reads and writes them as a BACnet clientSauter (e.g. modu680-AS) in CASE Suite via external BACnet objects using ReadProperty / WriteProperty services or COV (Change of Value). Siemens Desigo PXC in ABT Site via the standard BACnet Client block.

Advantage: 100 % reliability of deterministic execution, independence from CASE Suite or ABT licences and the ability to deploy any ST logic including OOP classes. The BMS keeps the visualisation, alarms and trends, which it reads from the same BACnet objects.

Recommended implementation for Sauter

Automatically generated code for buildings with Sauter CASE Suite:

  1. The ST code is defined as a standardised POU block in CODESYS V3.5.
  2. The intermediary is a compact DIN-rail controller, e.g. WAGO CC100 (priced around 200–300 €) or an industrial edge gateway.
  3. The ST code controls the technology and Capitanier generates an automatic table of BACnet/IP variables for it.
  4. A standardised BACnet EDE file (Engineering Data Exchange, CSV format) is handed over to Sauter CASE Suite. The Sauter programmer uses it to import all inputs and outputs into the visualisation and dispatching in one click, without rewriting the control logic.

Scenario for Siemens Desigo PXC controllers

When Desigo PXC (e.g. PXC4 / PXC7) is specified for the site together with ST code execution:

  1. The ST code runs on an open intermediate controller (WAGO, Unipi, S7-1200).
  2. Key variables are published via a BACnet/IP server.
  3. The Desigo PXC controller in ABT Site reads these variables via the standard BACnet Client block and provides zone control and the link to DXR room thermostats.

The only native Swiss BMS player with ST is Saia Burgess Controls (PCD / PG5): ST compiles directly into the CPU, but the address space of SBC media (registers, flags) must be respected. Sauter and Siemens Zug do not support IEC 61131-3 ST; their engineering is based on certified graphical macros tied to the BACnet object structure. Solution: an ST controller alongside, linked via BACnet objects, see above.

The dominant British BMS market (Trend, Cylon, Niagara) is not a directly compilable target for ST without an intermediary, i.e. a translator of the logic into proprietary blocks. Under the IEC standard, the realistic targets are Eurotherm E+PLC controllers or CODESYS / TwinCAT via the UK branches of German manufacturers.

✓ Direct: full IEC 61131-3 ST implementation, the code compiles without changes. ◐ Conditional: the code is adapted before loading (ST dialect, manufacturer data model) or applies only to some models. ✕ Via intermediary: the platform does not support ST; the logic is translated into its proprietary blocks. Other platforms with ST support according to libraries.

Frequently asked questions

The most frequent questions.

For which PLCs?+
For any PLC with full IEC 61131-3 Structured Text support: Beckhoff TwinCAT 3, CODESYS-based platforms (WAGO, DEOS, Exor, Eurotherm, Schneider Modicon), Phoenix Contact PLCnext, ABB AC500, Teco Mosaic, Unipi Mervis, Domat Merbon, LOYTEC, B&R, SIGMATEK, SBC, Eliwell, Elsist, Pixsys and others. Systems without ST (Trend, Cylon, Niagara, SpaceLogic, Distech, iSMA, Sauter, Siemens Desigo, Carel) require a translator into their proprietary blocks. The country-by-country overview is in the tables above. The overview is in the table above; other platforms according to libraries.
Who is responsible for the code?+
The engineer who approves it. AI prepares the proposal; functions come from approved libraries.
Can our program blocks be used?+
Yes. The library is extended with the customer's blocks and AI then uses them preferentially.
